Encouraging Thoughts for Preptober #1

I’m using this year’s NaNoWrimo to make the second draft for my upcoming novel Guardians of Masks and Memory. Right now, I’m doing research, redoing outlines, filling out worldbuilding questionnaires and character questionnaires, etc. I know that some other people are doing their own prep work and feelings range from overwhelmed to totally ready or maybe a mix of the two.

While we are all scrambling to get ourselves together by the first, I’m gonna leave some encouraging words to keep us motivated and hopefully keep us chill.

Creating your story is what got you into this in the first place. Don’t worry about where you would be hypothetically ranked on the New York Times Bestseller’s List or if you don’t reach your 50k goal. Be intentional about your work, but you owe it to yourself to get lost in it and enjoy the process. Let the music swell in your head as scenes and characters pour out from your fingers. There are days when your writing will feel killer and there will be other days when your writing feels like absolute drudgery. I haven’t reached 50k by the end of NaNoWrimo or Camp NaNoWrimo and I’ve done this quite a few times. The reason I keep coming back is because my story keeps calling me. There’s something in the back of my brain always asking me to finish it and deep down I want to get back on the journey too.
